SACRAMENTO, Calif., (January 18, 2023) –

The 2nd annual CA State Fair Cannabis Awards is now open for submissions. This state-sanctioned competition is open to all licensed cannabis cultivators and will celebrate the 2022/2023 harvest of the California-grown, cannabis flower. Cannabis is joining the official California State Fair roster of coveted competitions including wine, craft beer, cheese and olive oil.

The competition will be scored objectively, through science-based analysis performed and certified by SC Labs, California’s premier cannabis and hemp testing labs. SC Labs will test each cultivar for chemometric data, using an innovative terpene reporting platform – PhytoFacts®.

The report will identify specific terpenes and cannabinoids, and their levels of concentrations in the sample provided to determine the winners. Terpenes and cannabinoids in cannabis can represent upwards of 40 percent of the mass of a female flower, making the profile of these important compounds the best predictors of the aroma, flavor, and effects of a particular cultivar.

“SC Labs is proud to be the testing and scientific partner of the California State Fair Cannabis Awards for the second year in a row. The competition raises the bar on what’s considered as quality and innovative, by focusing on the overall cannabinoid and terpene profile, rather than THC. This is a great opportunity for California cannabis companies to showcase their hard work, creativity, and perseverance in a groundbreaking industry.” Said Jeff Journey, CEO of SC Labs.

The competition will award medals for cannabis flower only. Entrants will be classified by light source into three primary divisions: Indoor, Mixed Light and Outdoor. Each division will have awards for 11 cannabis compound categories:

  • Dominant Terpenes: Myrcene, Caryophyllene, Limonene, Terpinolene, Pinene, and Ocimene
  • Codominant Terpene profile: Myrcene, Caryophyllene, Limonene
  • Highest Terpene Content
  • Dominant Cannabinoids: CBGa, CBDa and THCa
  • Specialty: Unique (rare) terpene and cannabinoid

Entrants are vying for 70-plus awards, including silver and gold medals, double gold designation and eleven of the coveted Golden Bear trophies for “Best of California.” Submission details are here.

Award winners will be announced in June of 2023 and celebrated during the CA State Fair set to take place July 14 – 30, 2023, at the Cal Expo Fairgrounds in Sacramento, California. The awards have been developed in partnership between the California Expo & State Fair and Cultivar Brands, a California-based cannabis marketing and events agency.
